Chickenpox vaccination is given as a course of two doses, spaced several weeks apart, and current Australian Immunisation guidelines set out the recommended interval. As a live vaccine, it isn’t suitable during pregnancy or for people who are significantly immunocompromised without medical clearance — your pharmacist will check this with you first.

Before Your Vaccination

Be prepared to discuss:

• Whether you’ve had chickenpox before, or been vaccinated previously
• Whether you could be pregnant
• Any conditions or medicines that affect your immune system

During Your Vaccination

As chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine, your pharmacist will check for pregnancy or immune-suppressing conditions before proceeding.

You’ll then receive the injection, usually as a course of two doses several weeks apart, with a brief monitoring period afterward.
